Description

The AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder is an X-band battlefield radar manufactured by Raytheon E-Systems in the United States, designed to locate hostile artillery, rockets, and mortars. It serves as a replacement for older weapon-locating radars like the AN/MPQ-4. The system automatically scans a 90° sector of the horizon multiple times per second, intercepting and tracking projectiles, then computing their origin. This rapid automatic location typically provides the operator with the firing weapon's coordinates and altitude before the enemy round impacts. While its instrumented range is 24 km, the AN/TPQ-37 provides location for targets beyond this capability; both Firefinder radars can utilize the same operations shelter with different software. The AN/TPQ-36 can also expand its scanning sector up to 360° for insurgency operations and extrapolate projectile trajectories to predict impact points, aiding in prioritizing return fire.
