Description

The Corect, COntraves Rheinmetall Enhanced CorrecTion, is a module for satellite-based trajectory correction of artillery rockets being developed by Rheinmetall and Oerlikon Contraves for the German armaments procurement Agency BWB. The Corect module will be applied to M26 and AT-2 rockets used by the M270 MLRS multiple launch rocket system owned by many armies of the world to extend its range and accuracy. The range extension is achieved through payload reduction to accommodate the Corect module. The MLRS has been rubbed MARS in the German Army. This module combines a GPS receiver with a magnetic sensor to determine the rockets roll attitude measuring the earth's magnetic field and ultimately the rockets position. Based on these data the module applies the needed corrections to hit a given target. The module also carries micro-reaction thrusters to correct the trajectory. According to Rheinmetall tests, a Corect-modified artillery rocket can hit a given target with less than 50 meters of CEP. On the other hand, the same rocket without Corect performing the same engagement would yield a CEP of more than 100 meters. Rheinmetall and Oerlikon are marketing the Corect module as an add-on module for existing artillery rockets such as the M26 and AT-2. Typically, the Corect module extends the range of current artillery rockets from 30 to 40 kilometers. The life cycle of the rocket can be extended replacing the original warhead bomblets with self-destruction mechanism bomblets.
