Description

The HQ-16 is a medium-range vertically-launched surface-to-air missile (SAM) developed by China to provide air defense for surface ships. The new missile system was be deployed onboard the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Type 054A/Jiangkai II frigates beginning in 2008. The HQ-16 missile technology and design is based on the Russian 9M38 missile used by the Buk-M1 and Buk-M2 ground-based air defense systems. The HQ-16/A features a maximum range of up to 50 kilometers and a top speed in excess of Mach 3.
