Description

The Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF) program calls for a replacement for current Invincible-class aircraft carriers, also called all-deck cruisers, by 2012. Two larger more capable aircraft carrier will be constructed under CVF program with up to 46 aircraft onboard. The CVF carrier will be capable of operate both F-35B and V/STOL F-35C aircraft. The CVF will be able to accommodate future aircraft due to its planned long service life of about 50 years. The CVF carrier will no feature catapult and arresting recovery system but installation of these sub-systems will be possible in the future due to design flexibility. The Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom estimates the production costs of 2 CVF-carriers approximately in £2.7 billion ($4 billion). The first CVF will achieve operational capability in 2014 and the second in 2016. On 11 February 2005, UK MoD selected Kellogg Brown & Root (UK) Ltd (KBR) to act as the preferred 'Physical Integrator' on the future aircraft carrier (CVF) project. After October 2010 budget cuts the program was delayed two years with the UK to operate only the second aircraft carrier after 2019. As of July 2014, the Royal Navy plans for the first ship sea trials in 2017 and flight trials with the F-35B in 2018.
