Description
The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Sugashima-class of minehunters have been designed to perform mine countermeasure warfare. The propulsion system consists of two diesel engines developing 1,800-shp and a top speed of 14 knots. The vessel is equipped with a 20mm gun and a minehunting sonar. The JMSDF plans are to commission up to 12 minehunters beginning in 1999.
