AWS-6
The AWS-6 “Dolphin” is a G-band naval surveillance radar developed by Plessey in the United Kingdom. This 2D medium-to-short-range, multipurpose system is optimized for anti-missile tasks and suitable for ships with a displacement of 400 tons or more, with coastal surveillance and containerized versions also available. It features a traveling wave tube (TWT) transmitter with pulse compression using bi-phase modulation (PCR = 40), a peak power of 49 kW, an average power of 1 kW, and an instrumented range of 180 km. The AWS-6D, introduced in 1991, is a 3D derivative that uses stacked beams on receive only, concentrating energy into the lower beam for long-range detection and providing beam coverage up to 70 degrees at short ranges. The AWS-6E, a simplified two-beam version introduced in 1993, measures elevation to within one degree between 4 and 30 degrees by analyzing return differences from its two beams, functioning as a 2D radar outside this elevation range.
