Description

The Kosmos, early models known as Sputnik, is a series of military satellite put into orbit by the Soviet Union and subsequently by Russia. As of late 2010, more than 2,500 satellites have been produced under the Kosmos program and are still being used for a wide range of military missions such as Earth observation using electro-optical sensors, communications, early warning against ballistic missiles, reconnaissance using radar, anti-satellite weapons, navigation and technology demonstrator. The latest Kosmos satellites have a service life of up to seven years.
