The Maritime Preposition Force, MPF(F) ship is intended to support Department of Defense sea-basing concept. These ships will enable US military forces to deploy anywhere worldwide providing logistics support. The first MPF(F) construction would commence in fiscal year 2005 and would be commissioned in the 2012-2015 timeframe. The ship is also known as the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP). The sea-basing concept emerged during Iraqi Freedom operation when Turkey denied to grant access to Iraq through its border to US forces. Due to political reasons, the United States is reducing its overseas bases and the MPF(F) would try to fill the gap. The third MLP was the first ship of the class to be configured as an Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB), adding a flight deck, berthing, fuel storage, equipment storage, repair spaces, and accommodations for up to 250 personnel. The ship is capable of supporting missions including counter-piracy operations, maritime security operations, humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions and Marine Corps crisis response.
