Description

The S-200, SA-5 Gammon Western designation, is a massive, long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s to counter airborne threats, typically strike aircraft, at medium to long ranges flying at medium to high altitudes. The S-200 missile system is equipped with six single ramp-launched 5V28 missiles each of which features an impressive maximum range of 300 kilometers against targets flying at medium and high altitudes (10 to 30 km). This re-locatable missile system also includes a fire control radar and can be linked to longer range radars. The minimum range of this air defense system is 60 kilometers and the maximum range varies from 200 to 350 kilometers depending on atmospheric and target altitude conditions. From an operational point of view the S-200 batteries were installed at selected sites. The S-200 air missile system still remains in service with several countries but is deemed almost obsolete. In November 2013 the Islamic Republic of Iran stated that its S-200 air defense systems have been tested and upgraded with the new Sayyad-2 missile at least since August 2013.
