Description

The RS-24 Yars is a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) being developed by Russia as the replacement for existing RS-18/SS-19 Stiletto and RS-20/SS-18 Satan. The Russian Strategic Forces Command performed the first test-launch of an RS-24 missile from a mobile launcher at Plesetsk launch site in northwestern Russia on May 29, 2007. The RS-24 is based on the Topol-M ICBM and has been designed to carry four nuclear warheads along with four decoys for better missile defense penetration. The RS-24 is a mobile and silo-based missile system and would be fitted with anti-missile defense (ABM) technology such as radar-absorbing material. Other sources suggest that the RS-24 is the most capable ICBM produced ever worldwide. In October 2008, the Russian Strategic Forces Command announced that the RS-24 MIRVed missile will be deployed in silos and on mobile platforms beginning in 2009 thus replacing SS-18 and SS-19 intercontinental ballistic missiles. The new ICBM missile system was expected to remain in active duty until 2050. By 2020, the Russian Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) will be equipped with around 100 Yars missiles distributed in 14 regiments. That date may have been advanced to late 2018 or early 2019. The Yars-S designation refers to the mobile variant of the Yars missile system. The missile has a maximum range of 12,000 kilometers and can hit targets with an accuracy of 150 meters.
