Description

The AUKUS is a security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States against China made public on September 15, 2021. The AUKUS partnership prime goal will be delivering a new fleet of nuclear-powered submarines beginning by 2035-2040 to be operated the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The specifications of the AUKUS nuclear-powered attack submarine are unknown but should be armed with conventional weapons. The design is expected to be a modification of the HMS Ambush nuclear attack boat operated by the Royal Navy. Up to 15 nuclear-powered submarines incorporating sensitive US tech would be delivered until the mid-2060s. In March 2023, it was revealed that Australia would procure up to five (3+2) Virginia-class submarines in the 2030s as an interim solution. The AUKUS submarines would be delivered in the late 2030s or early 2040s. In March 2023, the United Kingdom selected the SSN-AUKUS design as the replacement for the Astute class nuclear-powered submarines with the first vessel to join the Royal Navy in the late 2030s and deliveries continuing through the 2050s. Australia is expected to get five SSN-AUKUS with options for another three from the early 2040s through the mid-2060s.
