Description

Julang I, also known as JL-1 or CSS-N-3, is a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) developed by China along with DF-21 IRBM. It is a based on a two-stage solid propellant missile design. Xia ballistic submarine carries 12 JL-1 missiles each armed with a 300-kiloton nuclear warhead. Julang I is planned to be replaced by more capable Julang 2 before 2010. The Julang-1A (JL-1A) is an improved version provided with a maximum range of 2,500 kilometers. This missile replaced JL-1 onboard Type 092/Xia submarine in the late 1990s.
