Description

The PRS-1M, also known as 53T6M, is a new hypersonic interceptor developed by Russia as part of the A-135 missile defense system and intended as the replacement for the 53T6 endo-atmospheric interceptor. The new interceptor is capable of reaching a top speed of 4 kilometers per second (Mach 14). The missile features an improved guidance system to surpass the decoys as well as better propulsion system while being fired from the same silos as the 53T6 short-range interceptor. The Russian Armed Forces conducted the first test ever of the PRS-1M interceptor in November 2017 from Kazakhstan and the second one on February 12, 2018, from the same location. The PRS-1M will have an estimated range of 100 kilometers and roughly the same size of its predecessor. It is capable of neutralizing single and multiple incoming ballistic missile warheads including the latest Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). In June 2019 a new test of the missile was carried out with the Russian press revealing that the new missile had the 53T6M designation. The missile employs a new composite fuel that allows achieving hypersonic from the very launch event and a maximum range of 2,000 kilometers. The interceptor missile is capable of speeds between 3,000 and 5,000 meters per second (Mach 10-17) and a fragmentation warhead instead of nuke. The Russian Armed Forces is developing this missile with the aim that a single 53T6M would be able to take out an incoming nuclear warhead. Besides, the 53T6M would be intended for use by the future A-235 missile defense system.
