C-40A Clipper

The C-40A Clipper is a modified Boeing 737-700 combi, also known as the 737-700C, commercial aircraft designed to meet the US Navy requirements for global airlift of cargo and passengers replacing its aging fleet of 29 C-9B Skytrain. It features improved avionics, fuel-efficient engines, and superior performance over C-9B aircraft. The C-40A Clipper can accommodate alternatively up to 121 passengers, 70 passengers and three pallets (combi configuration) or several pallets only on the main deck. As of November 2004, the US Navy had received seven C-40A aircraft from Boeing since April 2001 when the first delivery occurred. The C-40A program began in 1997. The C-40A aircraft inherits superior performance and range, 21st century avionics and quiet, fuel-efficient engines from Boeing 737-700C convertible aircraft. The eighth aircraft was delivered to the Naval Reserve on Friday, February 18, 2005. The ninth and final aircraft was scheduled for delivery in 2006. The 12th C-40A was delivered on October 21, 2011. The C-40B is based on the Boeing 737-700 business jet and provides an office-in-the-sky environment for US combatant commanders and other senior government officials. The Boeing company delivered the first C-40B to the US Air Force in late 2002 and the fourth aircraft on 8 June 2005. The C-40B fleet, assigned to 89th Airlift Wing, is based at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D.C. These aircraft feature secure in-flight broadband connectivity, encompassing data/video transmit and receive capability, to enhance communications, productivity and security. The US Air Force awarded Boeing an order for three Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) to replace retiring C-9A aircraft on February 8, 2005. BBJ is based on Next-Generation Boeing 737-700 jetliner and will provide worldwide transportation support for US government officials. The US Air Force refers to BBJ as the C-40C. These new aircraft are in addition to three C-40Cs previoulsy delivered to the US Air Force. They will be operated by the 932nd Airlift Wing at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. The first C-40C, under this contract, will be delivered to the USAF in 2007.
