Description

The AN/FPN-63(V) is an X-band solid-state Precision Approach Radar (PAR) designed for air traffic control at naval and Marine Corps air stations, replacing the PAR component of the AN/CPN-4 family. Operational since approximately 1978, this radar provides talk-down capabilities to guide military and civil aircraft for precision instrument landings during reduced meteorological conditions. It features a frequency range of 9.00 GHz to 9.16 GHz, a pulse width of 0.2 µs, and a peak power of 80 kW. The system can be mounted on a remotely controlled turntable and offers an instrumented range of 20 nautical miles, with selectable ranges of 10 or 20 miles, or 10 or 15 miles when Moving Target Indication (MTI) is active. It has a staggered pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 2750 Hz fixed and 3300 Hz, an MTI velocity offset control to mitigate echoes from weather or terrain, and a PAR minimums marker on the elevation scan to indicate decision height. The AN/FPN-63(V) has a course beamwidth of 0.85° in azimuth and 2.2° in elevation, and a glide beamwidth of 3.8° in azimuth and 0.55° in elevation, with a coverage of 20 degrees in azimuth and 8 degrees in elevation. The AN/MPN-23 is a trailer-mounted version of this equipment.
