Description

The AN/SPQ-9B is an X-band naval surface surveillance and tracking radar manufactured by Northrop Grumman Norden Systems. Operating as a track-while-scan, pulse-Doppler radar, it is designed to detect sea-skimming missiles at the horizon, even in heavy clutter, and simultaneously track surface targets and beacon responses. With a peak power of 1.2 kW and a 1° beamwidth, the AN/SPQ-9B features an upgraded air mode for enhanced detection and tracking of subsonic and supersonic sea-skimming missiles, achieving single-scan track disclosure through its three-beam antenna. It also includes an improved surface mode that supports the MK 86 Gun Fire Control System and provides backup navigation, with an instrumented range of 10 nautical miles and an antenna rotation period of 2 seconds.
