Description
The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Hyuga (DDH181) aircraft carrier is a 14,000t class ship intended to transport up to six anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters. It is provided with air defense capability based on the FCS-3 fire control radar system using two 20mm close-in weapon systems and vertical launch system (VLS) fitted with surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). Besides, it is equipped with torpedo launch tubes. The propulsion system consists of four gas turbines developing 100,000-hp and thus allowing a top speed of 30 knots. The JS Hyuga was commissioned by the JMSDF on March 18, 2009.
