Description

The Vikhr, also called AT-16 or Whirlwind in English, is a long range, supersonic, anti-tank missile designed to be launched from fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. It evolved from the Ataka anti-tank missile and is operational with the Ka-50/52 attack helicopter and the Su-25/39 close air support aircraft. It features a tandem shaped charge warhead to destroy the most advanced armored vehicles and an extended range over current Ataka missiles. The Vikhr missile was deployed with the Russian Armed Forces beginning in 1996. Once launched, the Vikhr missile depends on a Semi-Automatic Command to Line-Of-Sight (SACLOS) laser beam riding guidance system. It can be used as a short range air-to-air missile against targets flying at speeds of 800 km/h.
