Description

The Azarakhsh, Thunder in English, is a fighter aircraft developed in Iran in the late 1990s and manufactured by HESA. The aircraft design is based upon the F-5E Tiger II with major modifications such as double tail and a larger fuselage. It is equipped with Iranian and Russian avionics. Nevertheless, the Azarakhsh remains a light, twin-engine fighter aircraft enhanced for air-to-air combat missions and with its performance close to the F-5E rather than a fourth generation aircraft such as F-16 or F-18. The aircraft was ready for mass production in 2000 or later with an small number of fighters being ordered by the Iranian Air Force so far. As of 2008, the number of Azarakhsh jets in service is estimated at around ten.
