Description
The Raad is a ground-based medium-range air defense system developed by the Islamic Republic of Iran under its domestic weapons program started in 1992 as a response to the United States arms embargo. This weapon system is basically based on the Soviet Buk-M1 ground-based mobile air defense system. It utilizes the Taer 2 surface-to-air missile capable of hitting targets at ranges of 50 kilometers flying at more than 20,000 meters of altitude. The Raad weapon system has been optimized for use by the Iranian military forces. The Raad air defense system was displayed for the first time by Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) during a military parade in Teheran on September 21, 2012.
