Description

The DefTech AV8 Gempita (Thunder) is an amphibious multirole armoured vehicle developed by Malaysian defence company DefTech with the assistance of Turkey defence company FNSS. The Gempita resembles some of the Turkey FNSS Pars design and technology. The vehicle has a modular design which allows the fitting of different turrets, weapons, sensors, and communications systems on the same vehicle. The vehicle has 12 variants, including the armored personnel carrier, infantry fighting vehicle, tank destroyer, signals intelligence vehicle and recovery vehicles. The AV8 is manufactured by DefTech in Pahang, Malaysia.

Active Protection In addition to the standard 76-mm grenade launchers on the turret, four banks of 76-mm grenade launchers, each with four grenades, are mounted on each side of the front and rear of the vehicle to provide 360-degree protection. The launchers can be armed with different types of screening and fragmen tation grenades. The launchers can be activated manually in response to the vehicle's laser warner, which can display up to three targets simultaneously.

AV8 Infantry Fighting Vehicle This IFV variant is armed with a one-man FNSS Sharpshooter turret equipped with a stabilized ATK M242 25-mm cannon and an FN MAG 58M 7.62-mm coaxial machine gun.
AV8 Armored Fighting Vehicle This version for Malaysia's armored corps is equipped with a Denel Systems two-man LCT-30 turret. This is armed with the Denel stabilized 30-mm GI-30 external, dual-feed, linkless cannon and an FN MAG 58M 7.62-mm coaxial machine gun.
AV8 AFV with Ingwe anti-tank missiles This variant is equipped with an LCT-30 turret with a bank of two Denel Ingwe anti-tank guided missiles on each side. The Ingwe has a range of about 5,470 yd (5,000 m) with a tandem shaped-charge warhead that can penetrate up to 39 in (1,000 mm) of homogenous steel armor protected by reactive armor .
AV8 surveillance vehicle This variant is equipped with a Rheinmetall Vingtaqs mast-mounted long-range target acquisition and surveillance system, which includes a Thales Squire battlefield surveillance radar.

Protection
Hull Armor The hull consists of all-welded steel armor. Applique plates are available to increase protection to NATO Standard Agreement (STANAG) 4569 Level II, which defends against 7.62-mm armor-piercing rounds. The 60-degree frontal arc is protected against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds, while the roof is armored against 155-mm artillery fragments. The AV8 provides underbelly protection against a 13-lb (6-kg) anti-tank mine or 18 lb (8 kg) under the wheels. Spall liners are fitted.
