Description

The QianWei-1 (QW-1), also referred to as Vanguard 1 for the export market, is a man-portable shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile (SAM) developed by CASIC for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and export customers. Its design derived from the Russian 9K310/SA-16 Gimlet portable SAM system. It was first showcased in 1994 and entered service with the PLA by the end of the 1990s. The missile is produced under license in Pakistan under the Anza Mk-2 designation. This fire and forget missile features a cooled infrared seeker and a single-stage solid rocket and requires a crew of two-man to operate the weapon system effectively. The QW-1 can be deployed using tripods and other artifacts to support the launcher system. The Anza Mk-2 was utilized successfully by Pakistan to shoot down Indian Air Force's Mig-21 and Mig-27 aircraft over Kashmir in 1999. The QW-1M is an improved variant introduced in 2002 featuring enhanced seeker to effectively engage targets at lower altitudes with intense clutter and some improvements to the launch mechanism. The QW-1A features a target acquisition radar. The QW-11 or QW-1G is a variant specially suited for engaging low altitude cruise missiles. The QW-18 features a two color infrared seeker and is intended to effectively engage low altitude flying targets such as cruise missiles and targets protected by countermeasures.
