VBL (Véhicule Blindé Léger or Light Armored Vehicle) is a 4x4 tactical lightweight armored vehicle featuring high mobility, amphibious chassis and NBC protection. Powered by a 95-hp Peugeot turbo diesel engine the vehicle achieves a top speed of 95 kph on road and a maximum range of 600 km to 800 km. It is suitable for reconnaissance, infiltration and liaison vehicle roles. High mobility and STANAG level 1 light armor protection against ballistic threats are key elements of VBL design. VB2L is an improved version of VBL ordered by the French Army. Several variants have been developed based on the VBL vehicle's chassis. Following mission specific requirements VBL may be equipped with a 7.62mm roof-mounted machine gun; a Milan, TOW or Mistral missile launcher as well as other weapon systems and sensors furnished by the customer. Equipped with Milan VBL carries as many as six missiles. The VBL was developed in the late 1980s to meet the French Army requirements. So far, Panhard & Auverland have produced more than 2,300 VBLs for more than 16 international customers including the French Army which operates over 1,600 VBLs.
