The YY-20 is an air-refueling tanker aircraft developed by China on the basis of the Y-20 transport aircraft with the primary aim to support long-range operations of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The airplane was showcased for the first time in mid-2022 refueling J-16 multi-role fighter jets. Orginally the project was called YU-20, unofficial name, and was a new tanker aircraft being developed by China based upon the Y-20 strategic airlifter. The development of the new tanker aircraft was expected to support the future capabilities growth by the Chinese Armed Forces. China announced the development of the new aerial refueling aircraft in late November 2018 and was expected to enter service in the first half of the 2020s.
