MPM
The Metric Precision Munition (MPM) is an artillery guided round demonstrator developed by NEXTER and TDA on behalf of the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) under a contract awarded in February 2009. The program's scope is the procurement of low-cost technological units for navigation, piloting, guidance, target acquisition and detection using a semi-active laser (SAL) sensor, which can be integrated in several types of ammunition such as 120mm mortar, tank artillery, 155mm artillery, GMLRS rockets and 68mm helicopter rockets. The MPM program will be completed in 2012 with the live firings of the 120mm mortar rounds. The MPM SAL terminal guided ammunition is designed for use in operational engagements, particularly in urban terrain, and should allow for the metric precision treatment of one-off and overlapping targets limiting collateral damage. These targets are designated in the last seconds of ballistic flight by a laser designator operated by troops on the ground or an aircraft. The MPM's auto-director will detect the spot back-scattered by the target and supply the information to the guidance system and thus ensure terminal metric precision. Target designation is carried out by the same type of designator, regardless of the ammunition.
