Ermine 4x4 Quad Dutch Lightweight Tactical Vehicle
Ermine 4x4 Quad

The Ermine 4x4 Quad Dutch Lightweight Tactical Vehicle is a next-generation mobility platform developed through collaboration between Rheinmetall and REEQ, a Dutch technology startup specializing in hybrid-electric vehicle systems. Following Rheinmetall’s acquisition of REEQ in March 2024, REEQ was integrated as a subsidiary of Rheinmetall Defence Nederland B.V., with ongoing development and manufacturing in the Netherlands. The Ermine platform addresses a critical gap in modern military mobility by providing airmobile and light forces with silent, agile, and extended-range tactical transportation that surpasses the capabilities of conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles while maintaining the robustness required for austere operational environments. The suspension system features independent double-wishbone configurations at both the front and rear, ensuring optimal articulation across rough terrain. Disc brakes with regenerative braking systems enhance stopping power and recover kinetic energy, a key efficiency feature of the hybrid drivetrain architecture. The electric drivetrain’s silent-mode capability, achieved through full electric propulsion without diesel engine operation, provides a significant tactical advantage. A near-zero acoustic signature enables effective positioning for reconnaissance, the establishment of observation posts, and the execution of "hit-and-run" operations without triggering enemy acoustic detection systems. The vehicle’s low thermal profile during silent operation further reduces vulnerability to infrared detection, complicating adversary counter-ambush efforts. A defining capability of the Ermine Quad is its deployability by helicopter. The vehicle’s 875 kg dry weight allows it to be transported as an internal or external load on NATO-standard transport helicopters, including the CH-47 Chinook and C-130 Hercules. Up to four Ermine Quads can be deployed in a single Chinook sortie, enabling rapid force projection to austere landing zones without the need for conventional airfield infrastructure. The Ermine 4x4 Quad occupies a unique position within modern tactical mobility. Unlike larger all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) that sacrifice payload for speed, or tracked systems that sacrifice transportability for protection, the Ermine optimizes the balance of silent mobility, extended range, and rapid deployment, aligning with contemporary irregular warfare, Special Operations, and airmobile operations doctrine. The diesel-electric hybrid architecture mitigates key operational limitations associated with pure-electric platforms, such as insufficient range, and conventional diesel vehicles, including high acoustic and thermal signatures and reduced fuel efficiency. For forces conducting sustained independent operations without logistical support, the Ermine’s 1,000 km range and mobile power generation capability provide substantial operational advantages.
