Description

The Start is a family of lightweight solid-propellant launch vehicles developed on the basis of technologies, assemblies and units from the RS-12M/SS-25 Sickle road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile. The Start launch vehicles are designed to launch small-size spacecrafts into low Earth orbits from Plesetsk and Svobodny Cosmodromes. The several stages (four or five) are fueled by explosion-proof composite solid-propellant. Following the vehicle-mounted RS-12M/SS-25 ballistic missile performance, the Start launch vehicles are stored inside sealed launch canisters and kept in the horizontal during pre-launch operations. The launch vehicle inside its launch canister is erected for the launch. The Start vehicle is ejected off the launch canister by pressure thanks to a gas generator and the first rocket stage ignites. The launch vehicle features autonomous inertial control system while the payload injection into orbit is assisted by an on-board digital computer and high-precision gyro-devices.
