VBM Freccia Italian 8x8 Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle
The VBM Freccia

The VBM Freccia 8x8 Italian Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle forms the backbone of the Italian Army's mechanized units. Developed by the Iveco-Oto Melara consortium, the Freccia is a versatile and advanced platform designed for a wide range of combat scenarios, from peacekeeping missions to high-intensity warfare. It is the first digitized vehicle to enter service with the Italian Army, marking a significant step forward in the nation's military capabilities. The Italian Army is currently implementing the "2025 Freccia Upgrade Program", also known as the "VBM Plus", to modernize its Freccia fleet. This program includes enhancements to the vehicle's armor, an engine upgrade to 660 hp, and the integration of next-generation digital C4I systems. Furthermore, a next-generation version, the VBM 30 NG, is under development. This new variant will feature a more powerful 720 hp engine, a redesigned hull for improved survivability, and a Leonardo Hitfist turret with a 30mm cannon capable of firing airburst munitions to counter threats like drones. The VBM 30 NG will also be equipped with Spike LR2 missiles for extended-range engagements. By 2035, the Italian Army aims to have a total of 630 VBM platforms in service.
