The 9R31M is a vertically-launched, medium range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) designed to engage a wide variety of airborne and surface targets at ranges of up to 70 kilometers. The missile is especially well suited to shoot down low altitude flying cruise missiles, highly maneuverable targets and traditional aircraft as well as land and sea targets. The missile has been designed to withstand active electronic jamming. The 9R31M has been designed for deployment by the new Buk-M3 air defense missile system beginning in 2016. Each carrier vehicle will be able to transport six missiles compared with four missiles in previous versions of the Buk missile system.
