The Dolphin-class submarines, also known as Type 800, have been designed to perform surveillance, special operations infiltration, anti-ship and anti-submarine missions. Dolphin derived from the German Type 209-1300/1400 conventional attack submarines. Each Dolphin-class submarine is equipped with six 533mm torpedo tubes capable of launch Harpoon anti-ship missiles, torpedoes and mines. In the near term the Dolphin submarines may be able to accommodate land attack cruise missiles supplied by the United States or Israel's defense industry such as the Popeye Turbo which may be equipped with a nuclear warhead. The last two ships commissioned in 2013-2014 are more advanced than the previous three and feature an air-independent propulsion system based on fuel cells and ten torpedo tubes. Six torpedo tubes are 533mm in diameter and the remaining four are 650mm in diameter which makes them suitable for the Popeye Turbo SLCM nuclear missile. Besides, they are equipped with German-made CSU-90 active radar, a PRS-3 passive ranging sonar, and a FAS-3 flank sonar. They serve as deterrent for attacks from Gaza Strip and the Lebannon. A sixth boat was cancelled in favor of a Type 212 submarine.
