The Future Frigate Program, also referred to as Sea 5000 program, is aimed at delivering nine guided missile frigates as replacement for the ANZAC frigate class within the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The 6,000 to 7,000 ton class Sea 5000 frigates will be outfitted with the Aegis weapon system as stated in October 2017. Three major contractors are competing for this program: Navantia of Spain is offering a modified F100 class frigate; Fincantieri is offering a modified FREMM frigate; and BAE Systems is offering the Type 26 class frigate modified for the export market. Australia is expected to take a decision on the Future Frigate Program in 2018 with the construction of the first ship expected to begin in 2020. On June 29, 2018, Australia selected BAE Systems and Type 26 Global Combat Ship design as the basis for the Future Frigate Program which is now called the Hunter class. In February 2024, the government of Australia slashed the Hunter class frigate program to only six vessels.
