Description

The Royal Navy Hunt class mine countermeasures vessels were constructed out of glass reinforced plastic to perform minesweeping and mine hunting missions. They are outfitted with special devices to simulate acoustic and magnetic signatures of merchant and war ships. In addition, mine disposal systems provide mine hunting capability. The Hunt class vessels secondary weaponry consists of a 30mm naval gun, two 20 mm guns and two machine guns. Some Hunt vessels currently perform fishery protection instead of mine countermeasures missions. Eight Hunt class vessels are scheduled to be revamped with the Sonar 2193 and Nautis 3 command and control system beginning in March 2004 through April 2005.
