Description

The US Air Force Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) is a program aimed at delivering a new combat aircraft with new capabilities every four-to-five years instead of long-term programs as the F-35 aircraft. The NGAD program is aimed at delivering an array of systems/aircraft as replacement for existing F/A-22 and F-35 stealth jets. The US Air Force is expected to invest $9.8 billion in development and research from 2019 through 2024. The NGAD family of systems may deliver working airplanes in the late 2030s or the 2040s. In September 2020, it was revealed that the NGAD demonstrator had already completed its first flight. In 2023, the US Air Force plans call for the procurement of up to 200 aircraft. The US Air Force expects to select a contractor for the NGAD in 2024. The US Air Force awarded the NGAD contract to Boeing on March 21, 2025. The other bidded was Lockheed Martin. Both companies had been conducting experimental flights since 2019. The NGAD program will deliver the F-47 sixth generation combat aircraft in the 2040-2050 timeframe.
