Description

The ground-based A-235 Nudol is a next-generation anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defense system being developed by Russia as the replacement for the A-135 Amur ABM system. The Almaz-Antey Concern started the development in 2011 with the first tests being carried out in 2014 or 2015 and is expected to deliver a functional weapon system at some point in the 2020s. The secretive A-235 weapon system is expected to encompass several solid fueled hypersonic interceptors to engage targets within the atmosphere, exo-atmospheric targets and near space such as satellites and manned/unmanned maneuverable spacecraft. The interceptors will use kinetic energy instead of a nuclear warhead to neutralize the intended targets compared with previous Soviet strategic interceptors. The A-235 missile system, also referred to as OKR Samolet-M or RTTs-181M, might be deployed as a mobile ground-based anti-satellite weapon system in the Moscow area and potentially in other Russian regions. The new mobile ground system may feature three interceptors, also deployed on mobile platforms, to engage space targets at long (up to 1,500 kilometers), intermediate and short ranges. The system will be provided with a data-link with Voronezh, Don-2NP and other long-range strategic radar systems to engage space targets.
