AW169 AAS
The AgustaWestland AW169 Armed Aerial Scout (AAS) is an advanced twin-engine military helicopter designed to meet the requirements of existing and future battlefields. The spectrum of missions suitable for this helicopter includes armed reconnaissance, escort, command and control, security operations, deep operations, target acquisition and targeting, and fire support coordination. The airframe has been hardened to withstand damage from ballistic threats. The rotorcraft's critical systems feature multiple redundancies and the transmission can run-dry for 30 minutes. The aircraft leverages the design and technology from the AW169 commercial helicopter with the capability of being weaponized with guns, rocket launchers and air-to-ground missiles. It is powered by two enhanced PW210A engines enabled for operations in hot and high environments. AgustaWestland unveiled the new AW169 AAS aircraft on April 11, 2013. The AW169 AAS is designed to maximize operational effectiveness and reduce time and cost of maintenance, thanks to a reduced number of components compared to older or existing platforms, easy accessible and with an extended life cycle for many key components as well as advanced diagnostics devices. The aircraft also is provided self-sealing crashworthy fuel system, crashworthy airframe and seating, heavy duty landing gear and armor protection for crew, fuel system and vital components as well as an advanced integrated self-defence suite. The AW169 AAS modern design for engines and blades reduces heat and noise signature further contributing to mission effectiveness and survivability. The cockpit features three large multifunctional displays and touch screen technology with an outstanding external visibility. Avionics also includes an integrated 4-axis digital AFCS, advanced communications and data management system, a comprehensive sensors suite, synthetic vision and Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) / Head-up Display (HUD).
