W80
W80
The W80 is a small and compact, thermonuclear, variable yield warhead developed in the 1970s to fit into several cruise missiles such as the US Air Force ALCM and US Navy Tomahawk. The W80 warhead has variable yield between 5 and 150 kilotons having the same size of the Mark 81 bomb and weighing 130 kilograms. This warhead was provided to the US Air Force AGM-86 ALCM and AGM-129 cruise missiles and the US Navy BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missile as well as the ground-launched BGM-109G Gryphon cruise missile. The W80 was developed following the design of the B61 free-fall nuclear bomb entering service in the early 1980s. In 2014 the United States started the refurbishment of W80-1 warheads to the W80-4 utilizing new components with the aim to extend the service life of the W80 into the 2020s. The W80 is due for replacement in the 2020s by a new low yield nuke along with a new generation of cruise missiles being developed for the United States Armed Forces.
