Description

The DA 08 (Doels Aanwijzing, Dutch for target indication) is an F-band 2D naval medium- to long-range air and surface surveillance radar manufactured by Hollandse Signaalapparaten. Operating with a peak power of 145 kW and an average power of 5 kW, it has an instrumented range of 193 km (104 NMNM) and a range resolution of 90 m. It features a pulse-to-pulse coherent Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) transmitter, offering frequency agility and good range performance, though its high pulse power restricts harbor operation. The radar is available in two main versions: a Moving Target Indicator (MTI) for long-range surveillance and target indication, and a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) version for medium-range operations. It can utilize either a single or dual antenna feed, with the dual-beam variant employing two feedhorns for active main and passive high beams, mounted on a stabilized platform that is either hydraulically (LS designations) or electro-mechanically (S designations) operated. The DA 08, also designated AN/SPQ-501 in Canada, is being replaced by more advanced 3D long-range surveillance radars like Smart-L or TRS-3D.
