Description

The Brazilian Navy Niteroi is a class of light frigates designed and built by Vosper Thornycroft (VT) in the United Kingdom (4) and Brazil (3) between 1972 and 1986. The primary goal of these vessels is two perform anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions. The propulsion system combines two gas turbines and four diesel engines in a COmbined Diesel And Gas (CODAG) layout developing a top speed of 30 knots and allowing a maximum range in excess of 5,000 nautical miles. The ship's sensor suite includes radar, hull-mounted sonar and variable depth sonar. The ship also features flight deck and hangar for a single Super Lynx or AS350/355 helicopter. The weapon system includes a 114mm naval gun, two Bofors 40mm Mk3 guns, two triple torpedo tubes for Mk 46 torpedoes, four 12.7mm M2 machine guns, anti-submarine rockets, MM40 Exocet anti-ship missiles and Aspide surface-to-air missiles. The Brazilian Navy commissioned seven frigates between 1976 and 1986 with the last one being used for training purposes. These ships were upgraded between the mid-1990s and the mid-2000s with all the seven frigates still in active duty as of January 2018.
