The Japan Marine Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Awaji-class of oceanic minesweepers is a variant of the Yaeyema-class minesweeper optimized for operations in open sea waters. The hull is made of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and has been designed to clean waterways of mines in support of naval forces operating in the open sea. The 690-ton vessel is fitted with a propulsion system allowing a top speed of 14 knots. The propulsion system consists of two diesel engines developing 2,200-shp. The vessel is equipped with a 20mm gun and minesweeping equipment. The JMSDF commissioned the first vessel of this class in 2017 with three more ships expected to follow through 2024/2025.
