Description
The XM40 American Anti-Personnel Mine is also known as the Sandwich Button Bomb, an explosive, pressure-actuated, anti-personnel, blast landmine that went through a number of variations before being designated the XM40E5, its official name being, Mine Warning Anti-intrusion.

These landmines are small cloth bags filled with a pressure-sensitive explosive compound.
The landmines are available in two basic types, those designed for anti-personnel and material effect (Gravel Mines) and those designed as warning devices (Micro-Gravel and Sandwich Button Bombs).
Operation
Landmines were generally dispensed from the SUU-41, with a single dispenser holding between 1,470 and 7,500 mines, depending on the type.
Note
The landmines are packed in canisters filled with liquid Freon.
The liquid Freon renders the landmine explosive safe and unarmed.
Evaporation of the Freon, after the landmine has been dispersed causes the explosive compound to become pressure-sensitive (armed).
