CH-53E Super Stallion
CH-53E Super Stallion
The CH-53E Super Stallion, also referred to by Sikorsky as the S-80, is an enlarged variant of CH-53D model. The CH-53E is powered by three T64-GE-416 turboshaft engines and has a main rotor with seven blade instead of only six in previous models. These changes are meant to greatly improve the CH-53E lifting capabilities. Between 1980 and 1999 Sikorsky delivered approximately 150 CH-53E helicopters to the US Marine Corps. The US Navy also ordered the CH-53E for ship resupply. The US Navy and the USMC received more than 220 CH-53E and MH-53E helicopters from Sikorsky between 1980 and 1999. The MH-47E Sea Dragon is a variant of CH-53E Super Stallion. It is powered by three General Electric T64-GE-419 engines and is capable of towing a variety of mine-sweeping countermeasures systems. MH-47E primary role is Airborne MineCounterMeasures (AMCM) and its secondary roles are vertical shipboard delivery and assault support. Sea Dragon was developed as a replacement for aging US Navy's RH-53D AMCM helicopters. It results heavier and has greater fuel capacity than its ancestor. The first Sea Dragon achieved Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in 1983 in the US Navy. The MH-47E was exported to Japan procuring 11 aircraft under the S-80M-1 designation.
