GLONASS-K
GLONASS-K
The GLONASS-K is a new generation of navigation satellite developed by Russia as part of its global navigation system. The new spacecraft features an extended service life of 10 to 12 years compared to seven on the GLONASS-M satellites. GLONASS-K is suitable for both civil and military customers and will allow customers to determine their position on Earth within a few meters. The first GLONASS-K spacecraft completed its acoustic tests in August 2010 and was launched by a Soyuz-2 rocket from Plesetsk (Russia) space center in February 2011 becoming operational by the end of 2011. The GLONASS-K program was discontinued due to massive use of foreign components with the program scope downgraded from 33 satellites to only eight.
