Description
The Mbombe 4 South African 4x4 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) is designed to provide a user with a platform that can provide protection for personnel during routine duties such as patrols in a hostile environment where heavily armed assets are not an anticipated threat. It is produced under licence in India by Bharat Forge as the Kalyani M4 and has been proposed for licensed production in Thailand as the D-Lion.

The Mbombe 4 S is comparable in most respects to the standard Mbombe 4, but features several modifications designed to improve the vehicle's ability to operate in austere desert environments. These include changes to the air conditioning system and fuel system, the addition of a front bumper with an integral winch, changes to the rear door to allow for a spare tire to be carried, and interior changes to include additional storage space and improved access.

Note
The Mbombe 4 can be fitted with a roof hatch to access roof-mounted weapon stations, or it can accommodate a variety of turrets. Imagery released by Paramount shows that one option is the Snake Head Mk II protected weapon station from Jordan. The weapon station is enclosed from all sides and has a roof, offering the operator nearly 360° of armoured protection. The Snake Head Mk II, can be armed with a variety of weapons, including a 14.5 mm KPV HMG, 12.7 mm DShK HMG, 12.7 mm (.50 calibre) M2 HB MG, 7.62 mm FN MAG MG, 7.62 mm M240 MG, 7.62 mm PKM MG, and 5.56 mm FN Minimi. The weapon station is also equipped with three sliding firing ports, 11×20 cm in size, from which small arms can be fired. Elevation is from -10° to +50°.

Armor
The Mbombe 4 utilizes a steel monocoque hull, which provides ballistic protection from small-arms fire up to STANAG 4569 Level 3. The hull is V-shaped and the level of blast protection is rated to STANAG 4569 Level 4a (10 kg TNT equivalent under each wheel) and 4b (10 kg TNT equivalent under the hull). Paramount has also stated that the vehicle provides protection against a side blast or roadside bomb to the equivalent of 50 kg of TNT.
Applique Armor
The vehicle could be fitted with applique armor packages to provide a higher level of ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 4, as well as higher levels of mine protection if required, although this would be limited by the vehicle's payload of 2.7 tons.
