Description

The Grom-U Russian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is designed to function as a "wingman" in the forward attack echelon, working in coordination with manned aircraft such as the Su-35 and Su-57 fighters to enhance the effectiveness of aerial operations. Its roles include detecting and engaging tactical and local air defense systems, conducting reconnaissance, and gathering electronic intelligence. The UAV is also capable of striking surface and terrestrial targets at both tactical and operational depths, which is particularly significant for the Russian military. The Grom-U is part of an integrated aviation weapons system that comprises the UAV itself, a ground control station (operator module), and an aviation armament system (KAB). This system is designed to ensure that the Grom-U can be deployed effectively in various combat scenarios, whether supporting manned aircraft or operating independently. This new variant of the Grom UAV is expected to play a crucial role in modernizing aerial combat tactics and enhancing the operational capabilities of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Missiles The Grom-U is designed to carry Kh-38 air-to-surface missiles. Kronshtadt recently showcased the 520 kg Kh-38MLE laser-guided missile alongside a mock-up, highlighting that the entire modular range of Kh-38ME missiles can be utilized. This range includes four different missile variants, each equipped with various warheads, such as high-explosive fragmentation and penetration. Additionally, each variant features different guidance systems: the Kh-38MKE utilizes inertial and satellite navigation, the Kh-38MTE employs inertial thermal imaging, the Kh-38MAE is guided by inertial active radar, and the Kh-38MLE uses inertial laser guidance. These missiles are capable of engaging targets at speeds exceeding Mach 2 and can reach a maximum range of 70 km. Furthermore, the Tactical Missile Armament Corporation is developing additional air-to-surface missiles for the air vehicle, including the new Izdeliye-85 (Product-85) guided missile.
Bombs In addition, the Grom-U can be armed with guided bombs such as the KAB-250 and KAB-500 that can be fitted with laser- or satellite-based guidance systems.
