Description

The R2-HSTD French Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a fully autonomous, jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle manufactured by FLY-R, a French aerospace company based on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. The designation stands for High-Speed Target Drone, and the aircraft represents a specialized application of FLY-R's proprietary rhomboidal wing technology. The R2-HSTD is specifically designed as a target drone for military training exercises, particularly for ground-to-air and air-to-air combat training operations. It provides military forces with a realistic, cost-effective aerial target that can simulate various airborne threats, allowing operators of air defense systems to train under realistic conditions without the expense of using actual combat aircraft. The rhomboidal wing configuration sets the R2-HSTD apart from conventional target drones. This diamond-shaped design, viewed from above, features front wings swept backward and rear wings swept forward and angled downward, connecting at the wing tips. The configuration provides multiple advantages: 50% reduction in wingspan compared to conventional designs with equivalent lift capacity; Reduced aerodynamic drag resulting in lower fuel consumption; 30% reduction in structural mass; Wide speed range capability with stable performance across multiple flight regimes; Enhanced maneuverability relative to similarly-sized conventional aircraft; Compact footprint, enabling operation from limited infrastructure.

Payload Capacity 15 kg
Payload Flexibility The drone can carry various mission-specific payloads up to 15 kg, including IFF transponders, tracking flares, infrared and radar chaff dispensers, Lüneburg lenses (passive radar reflectors), active radar augmenters, and Missile Detection Indicators (MDI). This payload flexibility allows the R2-HSTD to represent multiple threat profiles during training exercises.
Command and Control The system features a line-of-sight (LOS) bi-directional data link for autonomous operations or remote piloting.
Launch and Recovery The aircraft features automatic takeoff capability and can recover via belly landing or with optional parachute recovery systems (minimum recovery altitude: 10-20 meters). Notably, the low minimum flight speed for heavy payloads allows the R2-HSTD to be launched using a compact launcher system without pyrotechnic devices or external rocket thrusters, significantly simplifying logistics compared to traditional target drones.
