Description

The Avenger is a mobile, short-range, air-defense system that provides protection against cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, and low-flying fixed-wing aircraft to ground forces. It has a crew of 2-man, operates day/night and in all-weather conditions, and is mounted on a HMMWV vehicle. The Avenger incorporates a fully rotatable turret providing 360-degree coverage. It employs up to 8 Stinger missiles or 12.7mm machine guns and can shoot on the move. The fire control system comprises a FLIR, laser range finder and an optical sight. It was deployed for the first time during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The US Army plans to procure more than 1,000 Avengers through 2005. Early in June 2005, the US Army awarded Boeing a $8.3 million contract for continuing upgrading Avenger gunner consoles through October 2008. The US Army intends to keep the Avenger weapon system up-to-date through such an effort. On 27 June 2006, Boeing made public that was re-starting the Avenger air defense system production line through a US Army's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract on behalf of Egypt. The number of Avenger fire units to be delivered to Egypt was not disclosed but the contract was valued at $50 million including associated spares and logistics support. Under this contract Egypt will take over its final Avenger short-range air defense in September 2008.
