Description

The Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-size utility helicopter marketed for both civil and military use. Originally designed and built by Aérospatiale, it is an enlarged and re-engined version of the original Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma. First flying in 1978, the Super Puma succeeded the SA 330 Puma as the main production model of the type in 1980; since 1990 Super Pumas in military service have been marketed under the AS532 Cougar designation. In civilian service a next generation successor to the AS 332 was introduced in 2004, the further-enlarged Eurocopter EC225 Super Puma.

Growth Super Puma In July of 1998, Eurocopter announced the development of a growth version of its Super Puma transport helicopter, called the Mk III, which was designed to compete with such helicopters as Sikorsky's S-92 . A military version was also planned. It was ultimately scrapped in favor of the EC 225/EC 725 , due to high development costs.
H225M Caracal/EC 725 The H225M completed its first flight in November 2000. The H225M is based on the proven fuselage and structural design of the Cougar Mk 2 with a new five-bladed main rotor and reinforced main gearbox. The helicopter also has a suite of integrated displays and piloting system. The H225M can carry a much higher military payload (24,692 lb), at a faster speed (150-170 kts) and a longer distance (800 nm) than its predecessors. Based on the 1990 nomenclature adjustment, the H225 Puma is the civil version of this latest variant. See separate record for more details.
