The Lockheed Martin's Shunk Works SR-72 is an hypersonic unmanned aircraft capable of Mach 6 and slated as the successor for the Mach 3 SR-71 Blackbird. Lockheed Martin has been working with Aerojet Rocketdyne to develop the new engines combining off-the-shelf turbine with a supersonic combustion ramjet air breathing jet engine. Working as a turbine engine it allows speeds of up to Mach 3 while the ramjet mode will enable speeds of up to Mach 6. The SR-72 may serve as a reconnaissance aircraft within the US Air Force by 2030. Lockheed Martin unveiled the SR-72 in June 2014.
