Description

The Namer, 'Leopard' in English, is a heavy armored personnel carrier (APC) derived from the Merkava Mk4 main battle tank chassis developed by IMI in the 2000s and manufactured by IDF Ordnance. The Israel Defense Force (IDF) took delivery of the first Namer APCs in late 2008. They saw combat for the first time during operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009. As of October 2010, the IDF is implementing the Iron Fist active protection system on the Namer highly survivable carriers. So far, Azerbaijan and Israel have conducted negotiations involving the sale of Namer heavy carrier vehicles. The high mobility 60-ton Namer APC is a powered by the 1,200-hp air-cooled diesel engine of the Merkava Mk3 tank. It is fitted with a Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) equipped with a 12.7mm machine gun or a MK19 grenade launcher in addition to a 7.62mm machine gun and a 60mm internal mortar. Besides, the RCWS can be equipped with two Spike anti-armor missiles. The vehicle's crew consists of three-man: commander, driver and RCWS operator. It can transport up to nine fully-equipped infantrymen. Its modular armor provides enhanced survivability. In 2017 the Namer was equipped with an unmanned turret provided with a 30mm cannon optimized for urban warfare.
