UAV-2 Gavilan

The UAV-2 Gavilan, 'Hawk' in English, is a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (TUAV) developed by the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE) to carry surveillance missions in support of fighting drug trafficking. The new unmanned aircraft has been optimized for operations in South America and can reach troubling areas such as the Amazonas rainforest. The airframe is made of carbon fiber and wood being powered by a gasoline engine for up to seven hours. A sensor pod mounted under the nose provides real-time video and photos. Taking off and landing operations are carried automatically by the aircraft. Ecuador unveiled the existence of the first prototype of the UAV-2 Gavilan surveillance drone on January 12, 2014. Development of the Gavilan started in 2009 and the unitary cost is estimated at $500,000. The UAV-2 Gavilan aerial vehicle performed its maiden flight in 2013 and was deployed in real missions detecting a ship loaded with drugs in the Pacific. Four more Gavilan drones will be produced in 2014 for use by the FAE with the following units produced expected for the export market.
